Up on the 101

March 4

2mi shakeout. Hip flexors. Groin. Quads. Back. Impossibly sore. Lots of stretching and icing.

Week: 62mi/6days. Decent considering all the winter, and the additional 6-8mi of x-training. Except that now I need to heal.

March 3

8mi, 57:05 (7:08/mi): LS8+xtra. Decent run...legs a little wobbly. Ah, who am I kidding. I was fatigued. From yesterday's mystery tour, yes. But moreso from a ridiculous hour or so attempting to ski...with Biz. It's almost like he never sent me an email telling me to take it easy...

March 2

18mi, 2:02:38 (6:49/mi): Magical Mystery Tour. And while it was magical, it was also with Biz. And THAT only occurred to me after I was half an hour from home 90min in to the run.

March 1

Day Off. Winter. You're not going to believe this, but Biz told me to take it easy.

Last Week:

Running x 1. Saturday "5 mile" fun-run in Bayfield. Ultra non-competitive. Finished 1st despite both missing the start while on the can and employing a sit, chat, and kick strategy before realizing the real leader was 2 minutes ahead of us. Followed with a polar bear plunge into the largest freshwater tub in the world. That should make late May ice bathing post-W2W easier.

Skiing x several including an interval "workout" and Saturday race. I joined a "good" local skier for his workout. His impecable technique matched perfectly with my aerobic prowess and much more developed upper body (if I may say so myself). This motivated me to race an 8k in Hayward just to see where I would stack up. The race was great apart from a humble start in the second row (not a problem in running; more of an issue in skiing). 1 x impromptu ski with Graham's mom (no really) after crossing paths in the woods near the hospital. She is a very good skier. Bear Chase 50k next Sunday!

If anyone wants to visit Ashland before April 1, they may come stay in my spacious farmhouse near the trails on the edge of town. Oooohh.

2.3 miles on the treadmill at 8.4 mph. 'Cause, well, it seemed appropriate.

March 4th

22 miles run in a week with 5 more days of skiing.

I also skiied in a race for the first time this winter -- a 30k skate up at Sovereign Lakes Nordic Club near Vernon, B.C..

Technically, this might be better known as SilverStar... In any case, incredible skiing! Once a World Cup ski venue, it was a challenging course of short hills, twisting turns and many transitions. Awesome snow at about 5000 ft of elevation.
Get there someday if you like to ski -- Nirvana.

To clarify my "skiied in a race" description: A mass start of about 200 folks sking everything from 2.5-30k. About 100 skiied the 30k, but I started at the back of the entire pack with some of my very nervous 12-15 year old skiiers. The main contingent of 30k racers was out of site about the time that I crossed the start line and I spent a good 7-8km skiing though the crowd to a point where I could actually ski at the desired pace. The end result of 1:41:23 was good for about 19th over all and 9th in my age group. I felt strong and was moving up the entire way. Easy to do when you start at the back :)

Monday: slept instead of running in the morning, but the gods were conspiring to let me run as the archivists forced me to take lunch meaning I could still stand at the end of the day. Nixed grocery shopping in favor of a run, excellent choice. About 4.5, usual loop, strong wind in my face for about 3/4 of the run. Not quite sure how that works.
