On a Sunday morning sidewalk/I'm wishin', Lord, that I was stoned...

March 18

10mi, Human Race 8K (27:14, 49th Overall): Not much to say about it. 5:20, 5:20, 5:43, 5:32, 5:20ish. The first two miles didn't feel too hard, but all of a sudden my legs were empty and my head was not in the race. Reminiscent of the MN Master's 15K this summer. Extremely frustrating way to open the circuit; time to Get In Gear. And my apologies to Kaluza for finishing lazily until he Got me into Gear over the last 100m. Gigantic Slabbaj Shout-Out to the brodes for his 31s 8K PR, for beating Brady Anderson, and for identifying some of the most relevant concerns about Paps' most recent spring training start.

Week: 55mi. Ok. Compared to last year through the Human Race I've done 110 more miles and at least 3 more workouts. So I'll wait to panic.

Sun, Mar. 19: 9ish in total, the 8k in 31:40. Pretty good effort-expenditure, as Ruben yanked me along and I had some motivation to not take the last mile off, but I don't know whether that's a good thing or not, as the fact that effort = 6:20 pace is not great. Next time I won't be racing the day after St. Patrick's Day, which should help out some.

I swear I've been running. The last three weeks have seen low mileage, but consistent running. Plus much school. That should start to not be the case as much as of now.

12 (race) Human Race 8k, 26:29. A 31s PR, for those noting. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked about that start to the season. 5:20, 5:20, 5:25, 5:20 and 5:04. Very pleased with the way the race played out, and how I turned out to have enough in the tank to get back on pace after the third mile. Followed by 4 miles cool down and capricious amounts of grease at Snuffy's.

Week: 37 miles. I told you so.

8 (55:39) Stone Arch 8 with Biz. He added on, like he noted, but overall the run was extremely sore. Hamstrings especially tight, but no surprise there. Time to get in shape!

March 18: 13mi on the dry dirt roads and steady hills above Perrygin Lake. Longest run in a while!

Week: 30mi. 4 days of running. Felt like doing more, which must mean that I am adding miles slowly enough.

Tuesday AM: usual 4.5 loop, despite the wind and morning, 45 seconds faster than normal. Go figure. My left leg was on strike for most of the run with calf and quad protesting loudly.

Apparently Chicago is good for my ego. An old dude asking for change at the bus stop called me cutie pie. What a great compliment.

6 (39:35) A&W. Ugh. Still very sore. Actually less sore than yesterday, but still significantly sore. Nothing special, but it's nice to be able to run the majority of the way on dirt again. My legs appreciate that.

March 20: 'bout 12, 10 or so with Betsy along the river. slow 'n easy. calves sore from Sunday, otherwise the legs and body feel fine.

saw a man running along the river hoisting a plate of cookies. if he's not careful, he's going to get beat down, either for looking silly or for the cookies.

the running has felt good the last couple weeks, in the sense of 'it feels good to be running.' encouraging. I'm still out of shape, huffing, etc, but there's some grit and verve and joy in the running, which is a good thing. will it last? stay tuned, folks, stay tuned; we'll see if Red's right on this one or not.

brooksie.

the parents of a friend of mine (erik larsson) just moved (or will so move) to winthrop. Charles and Susan Larsson, I think. Anyway, if they're anything like their son they are
1. Great
2. #1 in their computer science classes
3. Swedish
4. Always ready with a tin of imported chewing tobacco.
(not that I know anything about that)

just a heads up.

6 (39:34) A&W. Beautiful out. Ran around for a while, felt much better than the past couple days. Also did sprint drills and a couple of easy strides to loosen up a bit.
