the turkey is supposed to represent "fitness"

So, I'm trying this not only because of the impending end of "christopher's" "training" "cycle" next week (wouldn't want the airwaves dead for the 15 minutes he takes off after the race...), but because i'm having a bit of trouble hunting down this "fitness" mf'er. clearly there is a direct correlation between writing on the blog and getting fitness. hence: thanksfest. or tharksfest. or whatever it is. anyway: i want correlation.

So, i'll start with today since today was mediocre, and it continued a point already being made about my failure to properly correlate.

AM: skipped the run to eat food.
PM: 3 miles warm up (very nice day). 6 mile tempo on the arb loop. Splits were: 5:00, 4:59, 5:06 up the hill, 5:04, 5:01, 5:00. Not nearly as easy as it should have been. Then, I jogged 2 miles. Then 6 x edgewood hill. Hills were not hard so much as they just made things feel hazy and weird. Very marathony. So 10 hills became 6. 1 mile jog home. Day total: 14

Hooley posting here? Consider my mind blown.

Sunday: 2 up, 5k, 2 down. 5:00ish, 5:20, 5:34, 50ish secs, 16:46ish. Yeah. Took it out relaxed, expected that first mile to be about 5:20, so I'm going to go ahead and consider that a positive. Felt good for another half mile when my calves cramped up. Got passed at the 2 mile mark (no accuracy in the course is guaranteed or even expected) and wasn't thrilled about that. Made an effort to go back after the lead on the Stone Arch but that only served to tighten my legs up more, so I lollygagged my ass in from there. Aerobically felt pretty nice and easy, just the screwed up legs. Oh well.

Week: 50ish

Monday: MTPO 1:15:32 Really sore legs, kinda frosty morning, felt like it was a good idea to take it pretty easy. Raced in the new shoes yesterday and while I like their lightness and flexibility, I think that the lack of cushion and their greater flexibility than the shoes I've been training in contributed to the calf problems.

Tuesday: A & W rev. 41:47. Still sore, not quite as bad, but still took it pretty easy. I don't see any reason to try and do anything other than run easy until Thursday at the earliest. Bedar.

Week:
38ish miles, 1 race, no LR.
Eh. Scrapped the long cooldown after Sunday's race when I realized I just didn't care that much about a 40 mile week. Annie's seemed more important. Training picking up this week.

So, that race. Yeah, I'm out of shape. Shooting for 17 minutes led me out in 5:28, then 5:32, then 6:17 for the last 1.1, for 17:17. First mile felt comfortable, second felt ok, and the third felt like crap. It was chilly (35) and windy, not that either of those are reasons I ran that slow. Hopefully in two weeks I can do that twice in a row. That'll still put me a minute behind last year.

April 17: 14 min up, 3 x mile w/ 2 min rest, 14 min down. First mile ease into pace. . .5:51. Second "flying" mile striding the straights and floating the curves, 5:33. Last mile, pace, 5:40. Middle mile easiest, last mile almost as easy, first mile "hardest." Felt crappy getting going, felt good as things went on. There'll be some strides on Saturday, that's about it. Buya.

biz: be cool, stay in school. lots of rest and no more chocolate cake until monday night.

yesterday: knee was achy, so i played it k and the gang. 1 hour in the arbor-eat'em. day total: 9 miles.

noongom (today):
AM: 20 big minutes. that's 3 miles for you lay-people out there.

Lunch: battled with 2 spoonfuls of garlic and chili sauce on my tofu fried rice. lost badly.

PM: warmed. then, 8 x 1 mile. 4:47-4:49. 200ish jog on the infield in between. cooled.

Felt fine, except for the middle couple when that chili garlic sauce stopped in to smack me around. Also it was windy and i am a baby.

day total: 17 miles.

Rainy and grimy. Ran most of it inside. No need to chastise me though, Biz, since it almost melted my mind. One of those days that you just have to make the best out of a bad situation.

day: 12 miles.

Week of April 14-20

53 Miles, 1 race, 15.5 LR.
Much better mileage this week. First week over 50 miles in a couple months, and feelin' pretty good. Except for my legs, which are trashed from the half marathon on Saturday.

About that: Beautiful day, cloudy and high 40s. The course was stupid, involving a ton of twists and turns, including a hairpin turn, for the first few miles before someone realized it was a longish race and decided we could run straight for a while, turn around and come back. So the turns made my legs tighten up, which made the first miles the slowest. Once we stopped all the turning, my legs loosened up and I sped up some. Very encouraging after a crappy 5k last week to run about a minute faster than I expected.

"mile" splits. Very little faith in these, evidenced especially by the first one:
5:00, 7:13 (12:13), 5:41 (17:55), 5:56 (23:51), 5:57 (29:49)
6:11 (36:00), 5:21 (41:22), 5:48 (47:10), 11:28 (58:39)
5:56 (1:04:36), 5:48 (1:10:24), 6:29 (last 1.1: 5:54 pace)
