Every moment points towards the aftermath/Yeah-ah-ah

April 14-20

Six runs (M, T, W, F, Sa, Su), three 30min, three 40min. Started to feel like a slow runner, as opposed to a fat slob, on Friday. Shin splints have subsided, like winter, and running was pretty great this weekend. Saturday's 30min involved Collin Lawrence, which briefly had me thinking I was as fast as Noah.

Indeed to the tough performances. Rest. Recover. Back at it. Get out and kick some tail in a long trail race sometime this summer Chris!

Another couple of 40 mi. weeks for me. Apparently Chaple and I are on a similar trajectory since I too indulged in some half marathon tintilation on Saturday afternoon. Of the trail variety, with 2000 ft. of climb. 3 minutes slower than last year, but we started with an inch of snow on the ground. I'll take it. Sadly, I could not defend the Valley's honor, and the race was won by a non-local for the first time in its 6 year history... alas!

10 miles with corey. Distractions included (but were not limited to): 1 reluctant snapping turtle, 1 stick, 1 startled canine, the seeming unavailability of curtis johnson, mike, simon, baxter, cheapshots.

Am off to Peru for 10 days tomorrow where I am unsure of the running situation. The past couple of weeks have been decent for running and insanely busy (hence the lack of posts). Have gotten 65-70 mpw in all through April, which is about par for the course. The trails have been awesome as of late though. Now if only the people at Risk Management at Cornell would believe me that Polar Bears aren't that big a risk to undergraduate field assistants studying Hudsonian Godwits in Churchill, Manitoba, we'd really be in business.

Happy spring to all.

There was some light jogging to finish off last week, none of it particularly interesting. The extent of my stay in Boston was fantastically pleasant, aside from 3 hours of Monday.

Went out in 5:40's as per plan, felt as if I was walking with respect to the effort of those miles. I think I could have fallen asleep if I'd wanted to. Oddly, by 5k though, my quads were, like, really sore and tight. That wasn't too bad as I figured it was just discomfort and I don't tend to give those feelings much thought, especially on account of feeling really relaxed. By 10k they were real sore and I was struggling to maintain a decent rhythm. Over the next 5k I started looking for subway stops. My quads were completely cramped up which led to my back getting really tight, which threw some sciatic pain down the left leg, which all caused the rest of my body to constrict and contract into a ball of tightness. The notable lack of energy possessed by my body at this point collaborated with the general constriction to slow me down and put my heartrate at approximately 65 bpm. Now, my legs already felt as bad as they've ever felt at the end of a marathon, and the rest of my body was packing up and moving on. The best analogy that I can come up with for the last 27k would be that it felt like a 27k cooldown after a marathon, if you can imagine what that might be like. Don't get me wrong, I've had (a couple) more painful races, but this was overall the least pleasant time I've ever spent running. At least when things just hurt you can grit your teeth, snarl a little bit, and get after it. This was like passively lying on the side of the road as third graders with baseball bats beat the collective f*** out of me. Something that under normal circumstances would be impossible but on this day there was nothing to be done about it.

I'm not sure of a reason for what happened. I have two notions, which I think together have some explanatory power. 1. Not enough rest post-base phase. Needed more time with less volume and more recovery. The timeline would have been better had not the stress of school etc been involved, but needed to make more concessions there. 2. Too cautious on the downhills. I've never really had trouble with downhills screwing up my quads like that, and I've never intentionally held back on downhills like that before. Given point one above, it's probably fine that I didn't do that on account of only creating an opportunity to fall further back and give off an appearance of stupid pacing, but there is something to running the downhills too slow.

Done running for a while here--general idea is to finish law school before I run more. That might be too long, but we'll see.

Thanks to everyonr for the support through the winter and this weekend via the blog, email, etc. I blame all of you to some degree for making me not drop out. I'll punch you in the quads when you least expect it. . .

yesterday:
2 miles in the morning. 5 miles in louisville.

today:
3 warm up. race. 2 down. (18 total)
got out ok (4:50, 5:00) and then heavy d (ahole) pushed through a 3 miles set of tough hills. that was a way of putting space between the lead group and me. weird. after that things didn't change much. i ran alone and into the wind some. but downhill some, too. feels like the turkey's *just* beginning to come back to me a bit. 1:06:4something.

Week of April 21-27
58 miles, 1 race, 12 "LR."

Mileage getting higher, correlating spirits. Correlation defines causation. Need to start some workouts now that I have a week off from racing for the first time in a month.

Saturday was Get in Gear, which was interesting. Cold (35 degrees), snowing/sleeting/hailing and very windy. The wind was a cross wind for just about the whole way, except the last half mile or so was straight into the teeth of it. Ran slower than I wanted, but was actually encouraged by the fact that I sped up in the second half (until I hit the bridge and the wind, that is.) I think with better weather I could have been 15 seconds faster, which, while still slow, isn't quite as bad. I'm inclined to agree with Hools; that spot on the horizon might be feathered. Then again, I'm not wearing my glasses. I feel like the Antelope in Barrett's Privateers. And the turkey is the Yankee "lay low down with [fitness.]"

Splits: 5:36, 5:39, 5:48 (17:42 at 5k)
5:41, 5:38, 5:50 (17:46 second 5k)

35:28 total. Fine.

today: 66 min in the arb.

incidentally: place was crawling with turkeys.

in any event, last week was 80, no workouts, one race. a few weeks of 10kish training, now.
