When streams are ripe and swelled with [snow]

April 11

5mi, 33:12 (6:38/mi): West Side Five. Legs felt good. Day felt good. April snow felt OK but ground on my brain. Energy felt gone, and proved, in fact, to be gone. Tried to pick it up to do a tempo run and more or less fell over. So I threw some snowballs in the river and moseyed on home.

April 10

10mi, 1:11:25 (7:09/mi): Race for Justice course preview. With LSCC + Arneson. Ran ahead of Biz for most of the time to simulate race conditions.

April 9

11.5mi, 1:13:17 (6:22/mi): 3up, 16x200m w/200m jog, 4.5down. All untimed and zero urge to time them. Felt OK and would have done 20 if the feets hadn't gone to sleep because Lundberg is a genius. Or something less causal.

April 8

10.5mi, 1:10:08 (6:41/mi): LS8 extended. I think I might rename this run. Calves were moderate. Hair was done up in broken glass.

Week: 60mi/6days. Feel bad about missing the 17 @ Hyland...

April 7

Day Off. Sorry Dan & Biz. I'm a real soft girl having real hard times.

April 6

10mi, 1:07:22 (6:44/mi): Banging Camps. Calves destroyed after yesterday's spike wearing experiment. Should have stayed to defend Athens with H-town and Schrader.

5.5 (37:00) A&W not Extended. Figured that, as long as yesterday was an accidental 5 miles long, today could be a little shorter than planned. Probably also good, since over the last four days (not including today) I had done 55.5 miles. Despite that, the legs felt surprisingly fresh. There's still plenty of fatigue to go around down there in the muscles, but I think the adjustment I was hoping for is starting to happen. Good news, since there's only more of the same for another week and a half. Anyway, this was a run, and I did it. That's about all.

AM: 4.5 (30:40) Frat Boy 4. The name refers to the biker I passed at 6:30am (opposite direction) on Summit. He was clearly returning from a party where he had had some alcholic beverages, and the effects had yet to wear off. His bike left some telling tracks in the snow, including (about a mile later) a spot where he had stopped for a stoplight, and then just fallen over.

PM: 8 (54 something) Stone Arch 8. Upon Phil's request, actually. 8 was my plan, but I believe he mentioned something about 4 days in a row of running. So a big shout out to the co-blog founder for getting back on the train a bit. Company made what would have otherwise been a boring run much more interesting, on account of the distraction from running. So that was nice. The legs are definitely comeing around, but towards the end the fatigue was starting to creep back into the quads. We'll see about this 15 tomorrow...

I've misplaced the banana bread recipe that Hooley requested. Here is a good one that we've been making lately -- for Keeley's snack day at pre-school esp. -- and I will keep an eye out for the other!

•••

WHOLE WHEAT BANANA BREAD

3 tbsp. butter, at room temp.
1/3 c. honey 3 eggs, beaten
1 c. mashed banana, thawed if frozen
1/2 c. orange juice (or water)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 c. powdered milk
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
1/2 c. raisins

In a large bowl, beat butter and honey together until light. Add eggs, banana, orange juice and vanilla. Beat well. In a medium-size bowl, combine powdered milk, baking powder, baking soda and flour. Stir to mix together. Add the dry mixture to the banana mixture, blending with a few strokes. Add walnuts and raisins; blend again, lightly. Turn batter into a buttered 9x5-inch loaf pan. Bake at 325 degrees for about 1 hour, or until well browned and a cake tester comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pan. Cool completely before slicing or freezing. This bread can be thawed at room temperature in 3 to 4 hours.

2-2-1-2-1-2-2, actually more like 2.5-2-1-2-1-2-3.5. The effort was substantial as indicated by my recovery miles getting ridonck-a-donck-ulously slow. However, the times were even and the running felt great. It will be nice to have this one in the training log come relay time.

Getting excited about UVA as well too.

14.5 (1:36:34) Mark Twain Feeftain. So named for the drifting down the river part of the run. Biz might have another name for it, since he's the one who told me where to go, but until I hear otherwise, so be it. Ran out as if the plan were Main Tain, then turned North at the river road. Crossed at 694, and drifted back down the river to the big blue bridge, and finished the Main Tain loop. Beatiful run along the river once you get a little bit north of 44th. This is the way runs are supposed to feel. Effortless, both in breathing and muscles until about 1:25 in when the fatigue started making itself known in the quads. 88.5 miles in the last 7 days. Time to back off a little.

5.5 (37:51) A&W Special.
Nice, relaxed run around the GC this morning. It's finally spring weather the past few days, so the glorious weather is a treat. Legs felt sluggish again, but that's really no surprise after yesterday. Hopefully there's a little life left for tomorrow.

April 14: A & W ext, couldn't find the watch. Legs certainly a bit sore from yesterday and ideally that workout would have been performed a day earlier, but given the weather it was still the move to do it as I did. Loosened up over the course of the run and while I was still a bit tight and fatigued at the end I think the race tomorrow will go alright. I'm not expecting to run a rippin' fast time but if I can run smart and stay in the vicinity of 5:00 pace I think some positives can be had from it. We'll see.

First run in four days. One hour around the towns that I write about, looking for something interesting to write about, but there was nothing unless you count little leaguers and big hills. Was feeling like crap and then a woman asked if she could "borrow some speed."

I shouted, "NO! I NEED IT ALL TO ME SELF!"

Friday: 7ish on the river road. slow, daddy-o, slow.

Saturday: 10 or so, round the three lakes. also slow. then bought some new kicks from matt mascioli, some rice bowls and fruit peels at trader joes, and a big jug of that green shit tom was drinking last week that I ridiculed and then tried and liked. it's gooood, even if it coats the glass with a sludge reminiscent of the gunk left at the bottom of the carboy after brewing some beer.

10 (1:00:00) Race for Justice 5k.
Couple miles warmup, jumping over a train with somebody named Bobby. They did manage to get the train moved for the race, which was nice. Went out shooting for 5:20s, and came through the mile in 5:10. But I felt strong and fairly relaxed, so I didn't worry too much. The last mile felt hard, and there was no extra gear, but I'm pleased with the effort considering the recent mileage increase. Wound up third in 16:18 or so, which is much more in the range I should be in than that debacle of a 5k last week. I could definitely feel the quick 15 I did on Friday, so all things considered, a very good race today.

Shoutouts to Gehring, Tom, Biz, Betsy, Sherman, and Schrades for the extending of the Law School Cross Country team victory streak at the Race for Justice. Well done, everyone.

Sunday: 4.5 loop, not great, legs felt fine but the lungs were just totally unhappy the whole time, although I did feel better when I passed some woman who sounded like she was going to die she was hyperventilating so hard. I think running only once a week just isn't a good idea--makes me feel like ass every time I head out. Really really looking forward to some running in Portland the end of this week!

sunday: 7 or so. raced for, but did not find, justice. or much in the way of oomph in the legs. 19:05 or thereabouts, 6:02, 12:05, then a slower third mile as the legs didn't respond to my urging.

week somewhere around 45 miles, more than I've done in quite some time. need to string a couple of these together, maybe add a long run.

vin scully is da bomb.
