If she says we partied, then I'm pretty sure we partied

April 5

PM: 11mi, 5K at Carleton in 16:27. Cold and windy. Ran in tights. All in all, an encouraging effort. I think my splits were 5:20, :18, :16 and I felt in control the whole way. Close to threshold, and had enough left in the tank after the accumulated mileaj and the race to run uptempo with Biz and Hools back from Iron Bridge. A small, but nice confidence boost after the Human Race. After dinner I thought about going to bed instead of going to Perkins. But instead I went to Perkins with some of my friends because I wasn't tired enough to go to bed.

AM: 4mi, Shortcut: Just a shakeout to log miles and give myself additonal excuses for the afternoon. Felt surprisingly lively.

April 4

8mi, 53:23 (6:44/mi): LS8+xtra. Chilly. Played around with some accells during the run so I wouldn't have to do strides after. Also to investigate whether my legs could move faster than 7min pace.

April 3

12mi, 1:25:36 (7ish/mi): LSCC+over there+then to campus pizza. 1xdinner faster than Biz.

April 2

4mi, 27:47 (6:56/mi): Shortcut. Don't remember much about this run. Legs a little beat up from the weekend. But, Erik, you are definitely correct about the Hyland romp. I remember saying to my brother and Lundberg, "Nothing could be sweller!"

4-3
16.5--am--4 untimed; pm--1600, 800, 400, 400, 800, 1600 with 400 jog. Had hoped to go 5:00, 2:24, 68 but instead went 5:00, 2:29, 69, 70, 2:28, 5:09. Fatigue from the week is catching up with me

4-4
12--in-laws extended in 1:18:28; gorgeous afternoon and a nice, relaxed run

4-5
16.5--am--4 untimed; pm--12.5 through Alton Baker in 1:22:28; tried to keep it relaxed given the 10k coming up on Friday, but it was hot and I felt like it took a lot out of me.

4-6
4 thus far in an untimed run. We'll see how the 10k goes tonight. Could be 32+ minutes, could be under 31. Who knows? It's supposed to be hot again though. Bummer

AM: 4 (28:59) WF Ext. Talked Phil into another morning run-- I think he's starting to rethink his "I'll go if you're not going very far" line.

PM: 11.5 ("race") Went down to N'field, reasons unclear. Also unclear were the skies. Race time temperature was something like 30, with serious wind. It was uncomfortable. Ran with Tom for the first mile, or so, before ceding the fact that I would be slowing down whether I wanted to or not. Didn't quite pack it in, but slowed down to a threshold effort, which turned out to be 5:36ish pace for the rest of the race. I wasn't breathing hard at all (a fact which surprised some of the spectators) but my legs wouldn't really go. I blame the significant increase in miles over the last three weeks, but it's still pretty disapointing to run some 50 seconds slower than the last 5k of the Human Race. Bleh. Ran Iron Bridge for the CD with Sepe, since Hools, Biz and Tom were sprinting.

8 (54:54) Stone Arch 8. Goodness. Took several miles to start feeling normal in the legs- again no aerobic problems, just muscle fatigue. It was actually quite nice out when it wasn't winding directly in my face, which was most of the second half of the run. The dead fish is still on the sidewalk, if anyone is interested.

17 (2:00:13) Hyland. Wow. It's frickin' freezing out. Actually, running with the wind was quite nice, but into the wind was uncomfortable. Around an hour in, Biz and I started inching the pace down- a process that was frequently interrupted by uphills. After a half hour or so of increased pace we ran into Jessica and Marvelous Margoles, so we ran with them for about 15 minutes. The last 20 minutes were uptempo, and felt quite good. Again, except for the hills, I felt very strong, and like I could have kept going for a while. It might actually turn into a nice day, too.

9 (1:01:17) Str8 Shot + 1xHouse Recon. Nice out for a run today- though the wind kept it from getting anywhere near too warm, it wasn't cold either. Kind of like spring! A forgettable run, though it did take a remarkably long time to start feeling decent. I think the mileage is wearing a little bit.

Week:
79.5 miles, 17m long run, 1 wkt.
Overall a pretty good week. I told myself I wouldn't go up to 80 this week, so I managed to keep it under that limit. Also felt surprisingly good pushing a little on the long run, following a dissapointing 5k. Two more weeks of this mileage before Get in Gear.

10k at Willamette in 32:42. Well I said it might be over 32 minutes; I am going to chalk up to the fact that they held the race at 4:30 when it was 80 degrees out. Bagged it after the first two miles when I was completed dehydrated. Then decided to unbag it (sort of) when a guy passed me with two miles to go. At least I got a decent workout in.

April 7
14--1:32:28. Worked the kinks out after the first two miles and felt great for the rest of the run. Perfect afternoon after watching a fun track meet. Ah the wonders of Eugene.

April 8
24--2:37:20. Last long run before the 'thon. Meant to go 23, but somehow made it too long. After 20 who can tell anyway? Felt good pretty much the whole way, which gives me some confidence. Also it not being 80 degrees anymore helped.

Weekly total=111.5; one more week of high mileage and then taper.

AM: 8.5 (59:41) Str8 Shot. Ugh. Took 6 miles to "get going" which never really happened. Yesterday on this run, it took about 5 miles, and then I gradually worked the pace down to about 6:30, but today I didn't want to check the watch for the details. I'm sure it was slower than that. The last two miles didn't feel quite as terrible.

PM: 4 (27:25) WF Ext. Still Ugh. Felt much better towards the end of the run- but still sluggish. Muscle fatigue is definitely high right now.

April 2-8: 40mi

Swell indeed. A 6x2:15 hill workout on Thursday and a 15mi long run with lots of UP in Pipestone Canyon on Sunday. Sunflowers (arrowleaf balsmroot to be particular) were just starting to bloom...

I also got the jeep stuck in some shady-side snow enroute to Sunday's run. Tried and failed to gun through a 200ft section of too much snow still on the road. After 45 minutes of cramming logs, moss and floormats under the tires at various angles, I was about ready to run home/call for a tow. Low and behold, at this very momment, a good citizen happened along with tire chains. I'll be darned. They work!

16.5 (1:50:45) LSCC+ Planned to do only 11 or 12 today, so obviously things got a little out of hand. To start with, I was late, so I booked it over from Franklin and East River Road to the Law School, which I'm approximating at 2 miles in under 12 minutes. Then ran wonderfully relaxed and with great company for another 6 or so with the LSCC group and Peder Arneson. Then tried to beat the snow back to St. Paul. Headed down the River to Summit, and then over from there which turned into another 8ish, which led, as you can tell to a longer day than planned. Oh well, I felt great towards the end-best I've felt yet 1:50 into a run. Gradually worked the pace down to 6:30s over the last couple of miles, and with 1/2 to go I raced a biker who seemed to get the idea that I was racing her. She would have won if she didn't have to slow down to make a turn.

Saturday: Magical Mystery Tour 12 with Nick which was essentially Base 10 with a few modifications here and there plus about a mile tacked on each way because I didn't magically teleport to the Dunn Bros.

Sunday: a slow 5, and 5 is being generous.

Monday: an easy 6 or so with Betsy.

Tuesday: 'bout 7.5, 6ish with the LSCC crew plus the jog over with a too-full backpack.
