She said "why/why don't we drive through the night?/wake up down in, Mexico..."

6mi, 40:58 (6:50/mi): West Side Five + xtra. Easy w/Schrades. Legs stiff. Spent the day conducting Ayn Rand research. From what I can gather, her philosphy boils down to: "Impressive people are quite impressive. They should impress themselves and us. Oh, and just a few other points - Saying God exists is far more foolish than saying God does not exist; As long as the government doesn't give you stuff you've earned it; Rights do not apply in those primitive societies." Yes, well crafted, Ayn.

8mi, 54:09 (6:46/mi): Seventeen Forever 8. Ran past those camps down on the banks of the Mississippi River. Lethargic.

Tom I´m shocked that Ayn Rand didn´t getting you all pumped up. You should read Tobias Wolff´s novel, Old School, for an amusing characterization of her.

Friday

No running--all day travel en route to Maturin, Venezuela. Am still en route, stuck in the Caracas airport for another couple of hours. The running in Maturin should be delightful--the forcast is for a high of between 95-98 (and that´s Celsius) each day with thunderstorms. Should be fun. A good sign though was seeing a guy running laps around the Caracas airport. It at least proves that people run in this country and that they don´t get automatically shot for doing so; I hadn´t been so sure before.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow.

Senner, I saw the movie adaptation of that book. It was HILARIOUS.

Saturday: race, 13.1, 1:29:something. Ran the first 4 miles at 6:30 pace and decided that wouldn't be too much fun to continue and that I felt like crap/too tired/too fatigued to continue to do it, so I slowed javascript:void(0)down. Connected with Gehring a couple miles later and we ran together until he decided to run the last mile fast again. That didn't happen for me.

A little discouraging, but it was not the day for me. legs felt tight and sluggish. not much sleep the past few nights and a subpar warmup didn't help things. back on the mileage horse this week.

Sunday, long run, did 8 for the first time since early December. Was really feeling happy with the run until about 6 miles and then it was painful and then it got worse, but I finished. Started off with 8:30s and by the end was down to about 8:05s, which of course I was cursing because my body hurt but for some reason could not slow down.

The highlight was definitely when I gave some woman in the arb a disgusted look for the fact that she had on running tights, long sleeve shirt, coat, gloves, and earmuffs while I was wearing shorts and t-shirt--and the woman looked at me and laughed out loud. Not quite sure what was going on in her head. Perhaps my disgusted look doesn't look as disgusted as I thought. Alas.

sunday: slow, tired 10 miler, 6 of it with betsy. legs tired from yesterday.

week: 51 in 5. mileage a little lower than I'd like because I missed a run on friday and didn't get in quite as much as I'd hoped this weekend. hope to bump it up this week so long as work and some traveling this weekend don't get in the way. regardless, still progress on the getting-back-in-shape front.
