I like cold beverages

July 8

Day Off. It's unsurprising, but on July 3rd plaintiffs in Lynn, Massachusetts filed what is likely the first of several challenges to school assignment programs in light of the Supreme Court's decision on June 28th in Parents Involved. There's been a lot of chatter about whether that decision flips Brown on its head. Some of it is academically intersting; most of it is practically irrelevant. The closing paragraph in the Lynn plaintiff's brief shows why:

The rights established in the Court’s Parents Involved decision should be given effect “with all deliberate speed” and without the kinds of delays and obfuscations that accompanied the implementation of the right protecting children from de jure segregation in public schools that was announced in Brown v. Brd. of Ed., 349 U.S. 294, 300 (1955) (Brown II) (requiring the defendant school systems “to admit to public schools on a racially nondiscriminatory basis with all deliberate speed”). See, Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward, 377 U.S. 218, 234 (1964) (“The time for mere ‘deliberate speed’ has run out”).

So should we call in the National Guard for this effort, too?

Week: 42mi, 1 wkout. Only 1hr of yoga bc of some sickness on Friday and a closed studio on Sunday.

July 7

12mi, Fishouse Untimed. Good run with HDLN a couple hours after Sherman's bedtime, longest in about 6 weeks. We discussed some of the things that provoke our anger. Then we slowed down.

July 6

3mi, Untimed. The game's name is Recovery.

July 5

9mi, Untimed. ~2mi WU, ~5+ too fast through Kenwood and around Isles, ~2mi CD. At once humbling and encouraging for the first workout since May. Ran about the first half of the uptempo portion at a pretty steady pace and felt relatively comfortable. Picked it up to catch Dan, finished Isles with him and dropped off a lot going back up the hill through Kenwood to finish. Dan's pace estimates suggest that 6/mile was comfortable and that 5:35-45/mile was very uncomfortable. Fair enough. Very glad to have Dan's and Sherm's company.

richard rorty died pretty recently. he said: "words go all the way down" or something to that effect.

not only is that off the mark philosophically, but so is it legally, pedagogically, and (most important) really.

i just wanted to say that, even if it doesn't change anything.

For Hooley's benefit, I'm renaming every run "river."

July 8
6 (untimed) River.
Hot, but actually surprisingly not as bad as I expected. Not that this was by any stretch a good run, but it wasn't as bas as it should have been, given yesterday's mountain climbing debacle.

Finished in time for brunch at Zumbro with the 'Cat, Traff, Marvelous, 'Stroid, Sherm, JD and TC. This part was wonderful.

Week:
70 Miles, 1.5 wkts, 16.5 LR
Glad to have the miles in, though it was actually a bit less than I hoped for initially. A great workout with Tom and Sherm on Thursday preceded a "half" workout on Saturday. By the end it didn't matter how fast I tried to run up the hills, it was a workout just getting up them. Three months to TCM!

July 9
11 (1:12:48) River.
Was quite surprised to find myself running 6:30s. Despite the mid-80 degree weather, this was pretty comfortable, and the best I've felt in several days.

Monday: 12, Franklin Loop with a bit of up and down in there. 3 WU, 6 x Franklin Hill, 3.5 CD. Aside from the fact that it's not Wednesday, conditions were perfect: the sun had gone far enough down so the trail was in the shade, it wasn't too hot, and there was a hint of a breeze to cool me off.

Went in thinking I'd do 6-8 repeats. Did six, in 2:51, 2:50, 2:46, 2:47, 2:42, 2:42. Not sure whether I was starting at the "correct" tree or not -- there were a couple options that seemed plausible, and I chose the tree that gave me the longer repeat, which I think is right. Felt in control the entire time but the upper body got a little tied up on number six and I decided I'd leave on a positive note rather than blow the doors off doing another repeat or two. Nice slow cooldown.

July 9: Despite my negligence in the morning, I did manage a run. A & W w/ Rube, 34:35. Felt real good despite the full tummy. Weather was, like, a lot cooler. Have a bit of tightness in the very lower left ab/groin area that is uncomfortable.

July 10: That lower left ab thing = super uncomfortable. Sleeping was not the easiest thing to do with that thing rocking. It did alright on the slow run to the pool (25 mins), the light pool workout (25 mins), and the slow run home (25 mins). It certainly improves as it gets warmed up, but it's awful tight and sore. Oh well. Just an annoyance, nothing to blog about. Bedar.

8.5 (58:44) River.
Ran slow. Needed an easy day, but felt pretty good.

July 11
13 (1:22ish) River Solidarity Wkt.
2+ WU, 1 mile @MP, 20x 1 min hard, 1 min easy, 1 mile @MP, 2 CD.

Tough workout. The first mile felt great. The leg strength isn't quite there yet, but the aerobic capacity is. 5:48 for that (aiming for 6 minutes). It took until the third or fourth interval to start feeling the groove. I was running about what I consider current 1500 pace for the hard sections, so by the 15th I was definitely feeling it. Managed to arrange the direction of the last three well enough to start the final mile with just about a minute recovery from the last hard interval. Felt like I was having some trouble holding back (and was) and was much less comfortable on the last mile, but I thought I was pretty close to pace. In retrospect, I would put the effort on the last mile closer to 1/2MP than MP, and edging into threshold effort at times. Ran 5:36, so my estimate of pace was way off, but the time-for-effort was about right. Hard workout, but one I'm glad to have done.

Have fun the the fartlek, fellahs- wish I could join you.

am: 6 with Kate around town; Back in Eugene. Figured out that sometimes moving to more southerly latitudies does indeed mean that it will be warmer
pm: 6.5 (42:54) autzen bridge and around; damn it's hot. I think that I am heading back to Alaska permanently.

July 9
5.5 (35:49) around Hosmer and Elk Lakes; gorgeous run up in the mountains near Bend. Coach T talked about moving up here, if so, he will have some fabulous places to cycle and ski. Also saw a species of bird that I had never seen before. Very cool.

July 10
10 (1:09:13) in-laws; I would like to revise my ealier comments about it being hot. Sunday was warm. Today was fucking hot. Supposed to continue through much of the week. Lovely. It never gets this hot in Ithaca, right?

July 11
10 (1:11:22) Eugene; first 4 with Kate followed by 6 on my own. Succeeded in beating the heat, now we'll see if I can get any work done in an apartment that's like a billion degrees on the Kelvin scale.

Last week total: 51.5 miles in 6 days. This week am looking to bump it up to 70 and throw in something of a workout/race (tomorrow). Hopefully won't be too much of a shock to the system.
