Forcin' a light into all those stony faces left stranded on this warm July

July 4

6mi, Untimed. Coincidental Six, which will be the new name for West Side Five + xtra. Ran into another Church, and we soon met a fellow runner wrapped in the stars and stripes. He introduced himself as State. We did not run together. Also, pullups.

July 3

4mi, Untimed. Very slow. Possible causes: humidity, slowness. Also 1hr of yoga.

July 2

8mi, LSCC. Untimed. Too rambunxious for Betsy.

July 1

6mi, West Side Five + xtra. Untimed but very slow after yoga.

Week: 30mi/6days. 6hrs of yoga. Didn't really have a long run or a workout, but it's early yet. Will try to keep up with the yoga aprx 3x a week.

June 30

6mi. Como & Back w/BD. Good, easy run.

June 29

Day Off. Shocking, I know.

wednesday: 7, long franklin loop. ran into a thomas and a dan. hot, unpleasant run. got the dizzy jello legs for no good reason about halfway through and slogged the rest of it. draped my twig and berries in the stars and stripes, which a gaggle of three 40-something women on stone arch found hysterical.

thursday: 9, isles, with dan and tom. included about 2.5 miles at about 6 minute pace, which crushed me more than big pun could ever dream about crushing. plan was to do 5 at that pace. problems arose in the implementation phase of the plan, the part during which I tried to run the 5 miles at 6 minute pace. first two miles were in the 5:50 range, at which point the wheels started to come off. called off the dogs at 2.5 when my legs went right into lacticland (a lot less fun than candyland, by the way). eased up for a few minutes, then tried to convert the remainder into a fartlek workout, which also didn't go so well, as my legs are again at the point where they do not remember how to run fast. reasons: maybe some it's hot out reaction, maybe some marathon crap still floating around, maybe some lost conditioning from the last couple weeks of idling, maybe some residual problems from celebrating our nation's birthday a little too heartily the last couple nights.

I did (possibly) excite some biker by running shirtless with my beer gut.

11 (1:14:50) Coincidental 11?
Planned to do hills, as Tom may have mentioned. It was hot, I felt terrible, and I ran into Tom just in time. He was running up the Franklin hill just as I descended before the first one. I turned around, bagged the workout and ran with him back to his place, plus a bit, and then home. Glad to get in the miles, especially since I felt quite a bit better as the run went on.

June 5
9ish (1:00ish) Lake 'O The Isles.
Sherm pretty much said it all, except that he has me to blame for the 5:50s rather than 6-6:15 like we planned. We started over near the sculpture garden, and so were without any pace indicators for a while. Based on how I've been feeling running close to MP, I thought we were slow, and so when we hit the lake I picked it up a little. Ended up running the next two miles in 5:42 and 5:45ish. So it was a little quicker than planned, but I felt very smooth and pretty strong. Tom caught me around halfway in, after running with Sherm for a bit, and then I pushed up the hill leaving Isles. Ended up with just over 30 minutes for the tempo, which I would guess is just a bit longer than 5. Glad to get in a solid workout- makes me feel like bagging the hills yesterday was a good decision.

July 2
4 (24:01)--Thought that I needed to get ready really quickly to make a flight across the inlet, but then weather intervened and the flight got postponed a day. Thought about going for a second run to make up for the short am run, but never got around to it.

July 3
Day off. Let's see....dead car at 9:00 pm, a new car without any brakes, intermittent rain, not many birds. All in all in a less than successful trip and didn't get in a run in to boot.

July 4
6.5 (42:54)--Nice and easy around the airport. Of course immediately after we got back to Anchorage the weather improved.

July 5
8.25 (53:38)--A decent run on the coastal trail. Legs are starting to feel normal while running again.

things that piss me off, but i'm unwilling to admit surprise me, number 301:

[from an interview with seb coe about chicago's olympic bid]

" Q How do you think they need to frame the involvement with Iraq?

A In the two years we were out there, I could probably count on less than one hand any conversation that remotely bordered on any international political dimension."

If it weren't for Bejing and for the ugly fact of the IOC, the coolness with which Coe seems to toss that one off would be appalling. But, given those details, I guess it's just normal.

July 6
8.5 (59:39) Franklin-Lake.
Hot. Ran slow, and felt like running slow was a good idea. Stayed in the shade as much as possible, and around 6 miles in, started to feel a little better.

July 7
16.5 (1:58ish) Afton.
Ran around for about a mile, then went over to the start of the Afton 25k trail run. Jason Finch went out like usual, probably in 4:50 or so, but I tucked into a group that could have been called the "chase pack" were it not for the fact that we all knew we weren't going to catch Finch. Found myself in second for a while, then a kid with an Eden Prairie singlet caught me, and we chatted. Turns out he's an incoming freshman at Carleton in the fall. Good guy. Probably going to whip those boys into shape this year. He beat me, and informed me that he was hitting 100 miles this week. Anyway, eventually someone caught up, and ruined the nice feeling I had despite the hills. After a bit I found myself in second again, but the hills were starting to be a problem. Specifically that I wasn't really recovering from going up them. So a bunch of people passed me as I baby stepped up the rest of the hills and tried not to walk during the rest of it. I succeeded at that. Finished 7th in 1:51:53 by my watch. I was probably not too far behind a couple guys in front of me, but had no desire to push any more.

First real bomb of the racing season. Not that I had any intention of "racing," but I had this idea that I'd be able to run along in the lead pack at 7min pace and feel comfortable. For a while that was fine, but the hills really beat up my legs. I'm not dissapointed, since the real point of the run was to get in a long run, and I did that. Also, I'm very glad that I didn't have to run another lap when I finished. I definitely felt bad for the people doing the 50k, and glad that I switched. We'll see how the recovery goes from this one- my legs are a little achy so far, but ok. I would hope this won't be too much of a problem.

friday: 11, cedar lake with nick. hot. run was fairly slow.

saturday: 5, standard loop, with nick and rueben. really hot, totally unpleasant. then, yummy tacos, with special sauce.

sunday: 12 with nick, lake street loop plus a mile or so tacked on at the end. relatively slow. humid but not hot -- ran after the rain came in the twilight. after, some strides so my legs can relearn what it feels like to run fast, and pushups and situps. finally felt like I had my legs under me tonight; I'm sure the cooler weather helped.

week: 57 in 7, 1.5 workouts, 12 mile long run. good week mileage-wise as I jump back into training. not so good with the quicker stuff, which is fine at this point.

July 2-8

52mi. 5 days running. This afternoon I was seriously considering 60+ for the week... and then I took a nap. Averaging about 50mi and 5hrs sleep for the last 8 wks. Stepped up the long run again to 32mi. This was accomplished in just over 6hrs and included adequate highs (Spanish Creek Meadows) and lows (a final agonizing hour in 90-95 heat). Lessons were learned. I ordered some electrolyte tabs to be used with abandon on the next 4+ hour run.

July 6: Overslept by 3 hours. Missed working out in the morning, but was still on time for work. Did an easy 12 in the evening, taking the scenic route over to St. Paul. Untimed, forgot the watch inside, and on account of the 10:57 completion time of the run, didn't feel compelled to take the extra minute to head inside for the watch.

July 7: Easy, slower, 10 miler home from St. Paul. Pretty hungry by the time it was all said and done. Made and ate breakfast which was immediately followed by making and eating lunch. It's hot out.

July 8: "10" miles in 1:04ish with Hools in the am, following a bout of painting. Then back to painting with a quick stop at the Ideal Diner where I had to beg them to actually cook the amount of food that I ordered and subsequently consumed to their amazement. Figured, correctly, I wouldn't have time for lunch so figgered I'd eat both at the same time again. Finished the main floor bedroom though!

July 9: Overslept again. We'll see if anything happens tonight, but I've got a SAAC meeting so I kinda doubt it. . .
